Sebaceous Hyperplasia

Definition

It is defined as a skin condition in which a person develops small, yellowish growths, usually on the face. It is sometime called as Fordyce's condition. It is a benign hair oil-gland overgrowth. It is characterised by tiny yellow dots in groups and sometimes in sheets on the lips, inside the mouth, and sometimes on the genital skin. It is a proliferation of sebaceous glands around a hair follicle. The lesions may appear as small i.e.1-3 mm, superficial papules with a central pore. They do not tend to bleed as easily as do basal cell carcinomas. It is a skin disease typical to youth, but it may occur to the people at any age. They can be treated best with electrosurgery, but some lasers have shown promise.

Causes of Sebaceous Hyperplasia

The main causes of sebaceous hyperplasia are as:-

  • Sebaceous hyperplasia is contagious. That is easily spread by touch.
  • The Immune system defect may also causes sebaceous hyperplasia.
  • Cause of sebaceous hyperplasia, is uncertain, but it can tend to run in families that have a history of contracting Sebaceous Hyperplasia.
  • Aging is a factor for the development of this disease.
  • A widened sebaceous duct and an increased number of basal cells are the main causes of sebaceous hyperplasia.
  • Exposure to sun is the main cause of the disease.

Symptoms of Sebaceous Hyperplasia

The important and possible symptoms of sebaceous hyperplasia such as includes:-

  • Acne is a symptom of sebaceous hyperplasia disorder.
  • Dryness, of the hairs with loss of lubrications gives the indication for sebaceous hyperplasia.
  • The symptoms of this condition are 1-5 mm papules on the skin, mainly on the forehead, nose and cheeks, and sebarrhoeic facial skin.
  • The enlargementof the sebaceous gland is the primary symptom of sebaceous hyperplasia.
  • They are usually seen on the face as yellowish or yellowish white raised papules with central depression.

Treatments of Sebaceous Hyperplasia

The effective treatments of sebaceeous hyperplasia are as:-

  • Cosmetic procedures including minor surgery and liquid nitrogen freezing are also helpful.
  • Therapeutic treatments include photodynamic therapy, cryotherapy, cauterization or electro desiccation, topical chemical treatments are very effective remedies for sebaceous hyperplasia.
  • Oral isotretinoin are also effective in clearing some lesions after 2-6 weeks of treatment.
  • Accutane it is a powerfull drug and is very effective in curing this disease.
  • Light cautery, diathermy or laser vaporization are also helpful in removing skin lesions.
  • A tretinoin: is a gel or cream that is applied to the affected area of the body part. It is very useful for the fast recovery from disease.
