Pompholyx

Definition

Pompholyx eczema is a recurrent eczematous reaction characterized initially by an eruption of very itchy vesicles on the sides of the fingers and palms of the hands and occasionally on the soles of the feet and toes. The vesicles containing clear fluid, usually subside without rupturing, but in some cases they may become tense, burst and discharge. So there is formation of multiple dense vesicles and blisters. As the vesicles and blisters settles they may cause scaling of the skin. It is generally accompanied by pruritus, a burning sensation, and hyperhidrosis.

Pompholyx is generally common to youth, but it may occur to the people at any age. Pompholyx can affect individuals of all races. Individuals between the ages of twenty to forty are more affected commonly by the disease. It occurs slightly more frequently in females than in males.

Causes of Pompholyx

The observation of patients define some causes of the disease. Some Causes of Pompholyxare are as:

  • The vesicles produce intense itching. Scratching leads to skin changes with thickening. Scratching may also lead to secondary infections.
  • These conditions often run together in a family.
  • Stress or grief may also be a contributing factor in the development of the disease.
  • Doesn't appear to be directly linked to diet, though some foods may aggravate the condition.
  • It is a long-term problem, and may recur throughout life.
  • Use of certain detergents in washing dishes or clothes can also cause the disease.
  • Pompholyx may occur due to infection at a distant site( e.g. the feet or scalp).

Symptoms of Pompholyx

The possible symptoms of pompholyx such as includes:-

  • Weeping and crusting skin lesions.
  • The disease may result excessive sweating.
  • Pain may occur with larger blisters.
  • The disease with intense itching at the site of the blistering.
  • May be swelling at the rash site.
  • Cracks on the fingers or toes are generally found.

Treatment of Pompholyx

The most effective treatments for pompholyx are as:-

  • Topical steroid : Potent topical steroids should be applied to the affected areas nightly.
  • Hand creams or emollients can also provide the required results.
  • Antibiotics such as flucloxacillin should be prescribed by your doctor for secondary infection caused by scratching.
  • Oral anti-pruritics such as Atarax or Benadryl may alleviate itching.
  • Soaks or compresses using weak solutions of potassium permanganate , aluminium acetate, or vinegar makes the condition better.
  • Protect skin from dust .
