Discoloration of Elbows and Knees

Definition

Skin in the elbows and knees can be much darker than the surrounding skin. Melanin is responsible for giving color to the skin. Melanin, is a skin coloring pigment, produced from melanocytes. A white skin contains no melanin. The skin of knees and elbows are darker and thus having large number of melanin. There are several conditions in which melanocytes are either abnormal or abnormally distributed. Most skin conditions that cause discoloration are harmless.

A dark area indicates more numerous or more active melanocytes. A discoloration of elbows and knees are mainly due to benign hyperpigmentation.

Causes of discoloration of elbows and knees

  • Some medicines can also react badly to the skin of elbows and knees. This can affect the skin of the body. Discoloration of elbows and knees may be it.
  • The most important cause to have discoloration of elbows and knees is over exposure of the skin to sunlight. The sunlight exerts ultraviolet rays which are very harmful to our body and if the skin of elbows and knees remain uncovered for hours to direct sunlight then discoloration may happen.
  • Certain diseases i.e. Addison's syndrome, which is an endocrine diseases, may lead to discoloration of skin, mainly of elbows and knees.
  • The main cause of discoloration of elbows and knees is the overexposure to the sun rays, which produces the harmful ultraviolet radiations and thus causing discoloration of skin.
  • Certain medications can be responsible for discoloration of elbows and knees.

Symptoms of discoloration of elbows and knees

  • It is a bluish discoloration or dark discoloration of the skin of elbows and knees.
  • In this problem there may be some circles of dark color present on the skin of elbows and knees.
  • There may be some skin disturbance on the elbows and knees in which some pain or itching may happen.

Treatment for Discoloration of Elbows and Knees

The possible tips are given below:-

  • Apply the moisturizer oinments, to avoid from discoloration of skins of elbows and knees.
  • Apply creams that mostlt contains salicyclic acid, especially if the skin has thickened.
  • The accumulation of layers of dead skin can be removed through the process of exfoliation. It   helps remove the dead skin as well as lighten the area because of its whitening and softening effect.
  • Apply the mixture of glycerine and rose water to the skin.
  • Lemon juice is one of the best things that works great for avoiding the discoloration of elbows and knees.
  • Avoid the overexposure to the sun rays.
