Definition

The cells underneath our skin are constantly undergoing changes. The dead cells fall on the skin, which are known as dandruf. If your hair are gripped by fast changes it is better to consult a doctor. dandruf is of two kinds - dry and oily. Dry dandruf causes itch, while oily dandruf remains sticking to the scalp.

Dandruf is an enemy of the hair. It weakens the roots. Consequently, hair start falling off. This is a kind of contagious disease. Dandruf sticks on the skin of the scalp in a cake form and block free flow of air to the hair roots. As a result, hair become weak at the roots and loosen their hold. Using the comb, soap or brush of a man suffering from dandruf is dangerous as it is contagious.

Causes of Dandruff

Some of the common causes of dandruff are listed below:

• Excessive dryness on the scalp can also be a cause of dandruff - Some skin disorders like early seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, eczema, fungal infections of the scalp, occasionally bacterial infections, etc., are likely to manifest as just dandruff, especially in the initial stages.
• Stress can also lead to dandruff - If you are prone to dandruff, it certainly does fluctuate with stress. And the more stress you're under, the worse it gets.
• Using Hair Oil - This tends to increase of fungal elements. Although temporarily the flakes may appear to lessen, as they tend to stick to the scalp because of the oil, ultimately the dandruff is likely to increase.
• Using Unsuitable Shampoos - The skin of the scalp can react to a shampoo by flaking. This is more likely to happen with poor quality shampoos. Hence, always use shampoos made by reputed companies.
• Excessive oiliness can lead to dandruff - Excessive oiliness is common in teenagers who have a tendency towards pimples/acne. During the teenage life, some amount of scaling is normal. It tends to wax and wane and generally clears up between the ages of twenty and twenty-five.

Treatment of Dandruff

Here is list of the methods for treating Dandruff:

• If you have only a mild case of dandruff, shampooing your hair with a regular shampoo daily or twice a day will usually do the trick.
• Lather and rinse twice when using anti-dandruff shampoos, the first time cycle will clean your scalp, the second cycle will medicate it.
• For more stubborn dandruff or seborrhoeic eczema, selenium, zinc in coconut oil or salicylic acid can be successful.
• Coal tar, a byproduct of the coal manufacturing process, helps conditions such as dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis by slowing cell turnover.
• In severe cases dermatologists will prescribe a special ointment or lotion to treat the problem.
• A diet that provides enough zinc, B vitamins and essential fatty acid may help prevent dandruff.
• A low strength corticosteroid cream or lotion may also be applied to the affected areas of skin.
